Tips For Cleaning A Hawley Retainer

  • Daily cleaning
  • Clean your retainer with warm water and a soft toothbrush every day, especially when you brush your teeth. You can also use retainer-specific products like Brite or Fresh'n'Go. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, you can choose products that don't contain sulfates.

  • Soaking
You can soak your retainer in a mixture of baking soda and water to deep clean it, but you shouldn't do it too often or for too long. Soaking can damage the soldered metal pieces on your retainer, so you should only do it occasionally. If your retainer does have solder, you can soak it a few times at first to remove plaque buildup, but avoid soaking it regularly.
  • Storage
Keep your retainer in its carrying case when you're not using it, and make sure both the case and the retainer are clean and dry to prevent bacteria growth.
